Telephone (dianhua) and fax (chuanzhen)

The international telephone system is surprisingly good, and the national service is improving as the system is gradually updated. Local calls are usually free, although some hotels levy a charge. Two 5-fen coins are needed for public phones. Check the rates for international calls before using the service-there is often a minimum charge and sometimes a small fee is exacted even when there is no answer. This is also the case with faxes. Many hotels boast "business centers" featuring fax machines and other services. If you need to receive incoming telephone calls, give the caller your room number in advance, since operators and receptionists frequently have difficulty understanding foreign names.
